Emily Sliz with Unite for Sight

Dear Friend,

Hello! I am writing to wish you a very happy holiday season and to share with you some exciting news. I will be going to Ghana in March 2010 and will be working there for 4 months as a volunteer with an American non-profit organization called Unite For Sight (www.uniteforsight.org).

Unite For Sight partners with local eye clinics in Ghana, India, and Honduras to achieve high quality eye care for all. Their programs are locally led and managed by ophthalmologists at Unite For Sight's partner eye clinics and include examinations by local eye doctors, diagnosis and care for all treatable conditions, and education about prevention. These programs are delivered to the population in their villages year-round.

As a volunteer I will be trained to assist local eye nurses in outreach activities to screen for eye disease, coordinate eye surgeries, and provide education and follow-up care. In addition, I will be conducting independent research and developing my own project to help further Unite For Sight's goals.

For me, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about public health, international health, and to see a new part of the world before I apply to medical school when I return. But it is also a chance to share my good fortune in this life (as I am blessed with a wonderful family, friends, an education, and good health) by devoting my time and energy to those in need.

As a volunteer it is also my responsibility to fundraise for Unite For Sight before I leave for Ghana. 100% of donations go directly to providing eye care to patients living in extreme poverty, NOT to administrative or advertising costs. I will personally be paying for my travel, room, and board.

I would sincerely appreciate anything you could donate to support my fundraising efforts. Click here: Donation link to donate at my online fundraising page. Please note that donations are tax deductible (after you donate, Unite For Sight will email you a tax receipt).

If you prefer not to donate online, please:
1) make a check out to UNITE FOR SIGHT
2) write "solicited by Emily Sliz" on the check (all volunteers are required to raise at least $1,600)
3) and mail it to: Unite For Sight, Inc., 31 Brookwood Dr., Newtown, CT 06470

Finally, here are some good reasons to donate to Unite For Sight! How to help link.

Thank you so much. This work means a lot to me and I appreciate your support.

I would love to hear from you.
Emily Sliz
