Billy is a handsome, robust, brown tabby, and one of the friendliest cats at Thundering Paws.

Billy
Billy

He came to us from a volunteer with Shadow Cats. She trapped him in Thrall, Texas. When she realized he was very friendly, she put out "Found" posters in the neighborhood, and at the only store in Thrall. The only call she got was from a man who said he would shoot him or any other strays that came into his yard. Meanwhile, because Billy was staying in her house, and she has many other cats, she had him tested for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus).

Billy's test results were positive for FIV. It's a slow-acting virus that can, over several years, cause a gradual decline in the immune system, making the cat more vulnerable to a variety of infections. It is not curable. On the other hand, many cats with the virus live long, healthy lives with no symptoms. Billy shows no signs of illness.

It's possible that Billy's FIV test was a false positive. We are considering whether to try a more expensive test.

The virus is normally transmitted by a deep bite wound from an infected cat. That's why free-roaming, unaltered males, who tend to get in fights, are the ones who usually get FIV. Humans don't get FIV, only cats do. Even people that have been bitten by an FIV-positive cat or accidentally injected with the virus (in a laboratory) have not gotten the disease.

At Thundering Paws, we've had three other cats that tested positive for FIV, and all of them were stray or feral males, unneutered when trapped. Two of them, Fabio and Vincent, are calm and very friendly like Billy. Fabio is an exceptionally cuddly cat, and has been adopted by our friend Melinda. She also took in Billy for a short time. Billy was happy, but Fabio wanted to remain an only cat, so Billy is back at Thundering Paws. Vincent was with us for one day, before transfer to another sanctuary. At that time he was tattered from recent fights, but had charming manners.

All of the "boat cats" have now been adopted!

In August 2006, workers at a boat dealership in Austin discovered a litter of seven tiny tabbies, aboard a boat that had been delivered from Houston. We imagine the mother cat was away hunting, or was startled, when the boat was hauled away. One of our volunteers brought them to Thundering Paws, and most of the kittens were in foster care before being adopted.

The last two "boat cats" at Thundering Paws were Solace and Victor. They have just been adopted, together! We'll miss them, but we know they'll be happy in their new home. We would like to thank the workers who saved them, and all the volunteers who cared for and adored them, and the adopters for giving them good homes.

Our newest kitties available for adoption: three kittens, about four months old, each with a different tail. There was obviously some Manx in the mix for this litter, plus a little bit of Siamese. These kittens all came from a family of abandoned cats southwest of Austin. They are spayed and neutered, have their first set of shots, and are ready for new homes.

Cozumel is a sweet little gray tabby with a normal tail. Coz likes pets and likes to play with small toys. She'll bump heads with you and roll over for tummy tickles when you pet her. She can be a talkative little girl when she wants attention.

Her brother Tsunami is a friendly orange tabby with a very short tail, about 2 1/2 inches long. He's a little camera shy. Tsunami is a mellow fellow who enjoys pets and sometimes plays vigorously with toys.

Their sister Jackie Rabbit has a tiny tail that is curled up. It looks like a little bunny tail. She also has gorgeous blue eyes and loves to play, especially with a feather toy on a string.

There's nothing like a nice snug box to make a kitty feel secure. At Thundering Paws, we have plenty of boxes, carriers, beds, and even some open cages for cats to rest in. Edward is fond of this special pyramid-shaped box. Is he grooving to the supernatural resonance of pyramid power? Probably not, he's just naturally a very happy cat -- but it does make a good spot for a nap.

Edward is available for adoption along with his sister Evelyn. They are such a sweet pair.

Library kittens having a snackA family of young cats and kittens were making their home around the Pleasant Hill Library. Thanks to one of our volunteers, they have (all but one so far) been trapped and spayed or neutered. They were thought to be feral cats, but once they came into our hands it became immediately apparent that they are not at all feral, just nice cats who need good homes.

Perhaps your home? The weather is cooling off and it's a perfect time to snuggle up with a library kitten and a good book.

Four of them are tabbies, and we are sure they have a lot of Maine Coon in their family tree. They have the distinctive markings and the thick coats, some have the big bushy tails and large feet, and all have that friendly laid-back personality that makes the Maine Coon a favorite house pet.

Check out our adoptions page for photos and info about Ethel, Lucy, Macy, Gary, and Virginia, our library kittens. We think Gary and Virginia are brother and sister, and Lucy and Macy also make a good pair. Ethel is such a sweetie, and she gets along with all of the others. She may be the mom to the bunch of them.

Whatever their relationships, they all love each other, and can be adopted individually or in groups.

Rocky, who didn't have a name at the time, was a stray cat living in a field in Round Rock. A kind woman named Angie fed him and one time took a tick off his eye area when he presented it to her. He showed absolutely no aggression, either when she peeled the tick off of him, or at any other time.

One day, however, she noticed some children tormenting him. I don't know--nor do I want to know--what they were doing. Before she could intervene, Rocky bit one of his tormentors and was subsequently hauled off to the Round Rock kill shelter. Fortunately for him, they kept him alive for rabies observation.

Angie and I spent a frustrating few days trying to find someone to whom the Round Rock shelter would release the cat. Beverly Williams from Animal Trustees of Austin offered help, as did Sheila Smith from Shadow Cats. Sheila took him out of the shelter and our veterinarians' office offered to keep him for rabies observation until his ten days was up. At that time, he showed no sign of rabies, so he came to Thundering Paws, where he got his name. He has certainly shown no aggression since he came here.

Rocky

Rocky is a LARGE brown tabby, and he's probably around two or three years old. He enjoys being petted but does not like to be picked up. He is not crazy about the other cats here, but he is settling in and getting used to them. He arrived on Tuesday, 12/26/06, and he will probably be let out of his cage on Monday, 1/1/07. He was tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV at the vet's office. We should have a picture of Rocky up on our website by 1/7/07 at the latest.

Rocky is a good fellow and we are happy to help him find his forever home. If you are interested in adopting Rocky, or any of our other animals, please fill out the online adoption application, or call 512/402-9725.

Thank you for all you do for animals!

OK, so it's going to be hot again today, in the upper 80s. But you know that cooler weather is just around the corner, so get ready now. There's nothing better on a chilly winter day than sitting on your comfy sofa with a good book, a cup of tea, and a couple of purring kitties to cuddle with.

We have some beautiful and friendly kittens who would be perfect companions for you. Patricia, shown below, is one of our prettiest cats. She's got bright calico colors in a tabby pattern, a white chest, and the cutest little white feet. She loves people and also loves to play.

Patricia

Her sister Chris is extremely affectionate. She loves to give kitty kisses and will purr and purr as soon as she sees you. She's definitely a cuddler. A third sister, Anna Star, is also beautiful, but is a little shy right now. All she needs is a loving home to help her feel a little more secure. One, two, or even all three of these kittens would liven up your home and help chase away the winter blues.

If you'd like to meet these girls in person, come see us at Tomlinson's pet store on Bee Caves Road this Saturday, November 11, from 11am to 3pm, or contact us to set up an appointment to meet them out at the sanctuary.

The Lost Bunny was out looking for a little something to nibble on. It was pretty scary hopping around all alone with nothing to eat and no comfortable hutch to rest in. There were dogs around, and foxes, and cats, and hungry coyotes. The Lost Bunny was not a wild rabbit. He was a big fluffy white bunny with cute grey ears and pink eyes. He was definitely not the kind of bunny that should be alone in the woods.

But the Lost Bunny was about to become a very Lucky Bunny. Why was this bunny so lucky? Because he just happened to hop right into the yard of some very nice people who knew just what to do to help him.

The nice people brought the Lucky Bunny some yummy things to eat. This made the bunny happy, and he thought about making friends with the people, but he was too afraid. He hopped away and spent the night hiding from all the dangerous animals that were out hunting.

The next day, the Lucky Bunny hopped into the same yard. Yes! The nice people were there again with delicious food! This time he wasn't quite as afraid, and took some food from their hands. But he was still a little afraid and did not want to be picked up. He hopped away again. Another night out in the wild.

These very nice people did not give up on the Lucky Bunny. They looked all around the neighborhood and at the local animal shelter to find out if anyone knew where the bunny's home was. Each day they watched for him to come into their yard, and gave him good things to eat. They paid attention and learned that he especially liked to eat slices of fresh peach.

One day they put some peach slices into the bottom of a cat carrier, and while the Lucky Bunny was eating the peaches, they closed up the carrier and brought him into the house. Now the bunny was safe inside, with real rabbit food, greens, hay, and of course, his favorite food -- peaches. He had a hutch and a litter box, and he knew just how to use it. No more scary nights alone out in the wild for this Lucky Bunny.

The nice people who rescued the Lucky Bunny, now named Peaches, arranged for him to come to Thundering Paws to live. Peaches is happy here at Thundering Paws, and is welcome to stay with us until he is adopted by someone who will love him and take good care of him. He is a very nice bunny who likes to be talked to and has soft beautiful fur.

If you would like to adopt Peaches, contact us to set up a time to meet him.

Fabio

Fabio is FIV+ so he would need to be put into a good home with either no pets, or with other FIV+ kitties. FIV is basically HIV in kitties, so if you treat him well, he will be perfectly fine.

Fabio is loving and friendly. He loves to be held and is very comfortable in your arms. He is like a big blob of jelly, totally relaxed all the time. Fabio is not a rat cat, but rather a family cat.

We guarantee that your family will fall in love with Fabio in the first 5 minutes.

Save a Life

You know that Thundering Paws is a no-kill facility, so none of our animals are in immediate danger as is the case in some other animal shelters. We are, however, operating at full capacity in order to help as many animals as we can. When you adopt from us, you free up space and resources that we can use to rescue another animal - you save that animal's life.

The Right Cat for You

Tabby, tuxedo, blue, calico, tortoiseshell, you are sure to find a gorgeous new friend at Thundering Paws. We have all kinds of cats and we can match you up with the perfect pet to fit your lifestyle. We'e got playful kittens, active adults, and quiet senior cats that still have a lot of love to give. Our cats have plenty of interaction with each other and with our workers and volunteers. We know the personality of each cat so we can help you choose. If you'd like more than one cat, we know which of our cats are "best friends" who would love a new home together. We even have some mother-daughter and sibling pairs that make perfect companions for each other.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

We want you to be happy with your new cat, and we want the cat to have the best home possible. If for any reason the adoption does not work out, we will take the cat back.

Not Sure?

Maybe you've been thinking about adding a pet but are not sure how to introduce a new cat to your home. The Drs. Foster and Smith website has many articles containing concrete suggestions for keeping stress to you and your new cat at a minimum (see http://tinyurl.com/kche8).
