The Animal Advocates program is designed for people wanting to adopt out a foundling animal in their possession. Thundering Paws has limited space and resources to take in all the animals in need, but we can give Advocates access to our adoption contacts and networks to ease the process of finding a forever home for an animal in your care.
Thundering Paws requires Advocates to sign a written agreement and may send a representative to visit your home prior to acceptance into the program. Advocates are expected to:
1. Provide Ongoing Care until Adoption
Advocates provide food, shelter, transportation, socialization and love, as well as access to vet care including spay/neuter, vaccinations, testing, and care for illness or injury. You may use our veterinarians and any discounts available to us.
Prior to adoption events, cats and dogs must be spayed/neutered, current on rabies vaccinations, and flea and worm free. Cats must have a current FVRCP and FeLV vaccination series, and a negative combo test. Dogs must have a current DHLPP series, Bordatella, heartworm test, and be on heart-worm preventative. Paper proof is required.
A cat must live inside after being combo tested. A dog may live in a fenced yard, but may not be chained or tied.
2. Provide Pet Information & Updates
Thundering Paws will need a detailed bio and photo to hang on the pet’s crate at adoption events and post on our website and other sites. (Note: We use social media to promote adoption events.)
The more personal details and photos you can include about the pet, the better! See samples on our web site.
3. Attend Adoption Events
We hold weekly adoption events at Tomlinson’s Feed in Lakeway the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Saturday of the month as well as PetSmart in Bee Cave, every Sunday. The advocates need to stay with their animals during these events because you know the pet best. Your presence is necessary to talk to potential adopters and answer pertinent questions.
Attendance at more adoption events increases the chance for adoption. There is no way to know how long it will take for your pet to get adopted. Young animals usually get adopted faster than adults.
Adoption Process
Potential adopters apply for adoption through Thundering Paws and are subject to our screening process. If an adopter is approved, we deliver the pet to the adopter’s home. We do not do same-day adoptions except for those already screened.
You may not say “Yes” to a potential adopter over us. You may say “No” over us. However, if you say “No” three times, we will assume no one meets your standards and that the pet will remain in your care with no further adoption attempts. It’s okay – we understand this!
Adoption fees go to Thundering Paws. We are a non-profit organization and rely on adoption fees and donations to help pay expenses.
We guarantee that every one of the animals who come into our program has a lifetime home. Therefore, if your foundling is returned, he/she will come back to you.
Thank you very much for helping animals.
