What Happens to Bonded Pair of Cats

Hansel and Willow, best friends and bonded pair
Hansel and Willow, best friends and bonded pair.

Last year, we took in a brother and a sister, six-week-old kittens found in a barbecue pit. Since they were found in an oven—sort of—we named them Hansel and Gretel. They seemed very connected and we adopted them together as a couple. They didn’t stay bonded: Gretel glued herself to the man and when the humans broke up, he took her.

However, they had already adopted another kitty, whom they named Willow. Willow and Hansel became best friends, grooming, cuddling, and purring. At the time of the breakup, the woman had no job and moved in with relatives. She couldn’t take her cats.

Hansel was ours. We have a policy that any cat we adopt out can be returned to us at any time during their life. Of course, we would take Hansel back. But what was to become of Willow? If Hansel and Willow weren’t BFFs, we might not have taken her. But they were, and we did. They’re now adopted and will live happily ever after together.

Feline leukemia negative (FeLV-) Rooster and feline leukemia positive (FeLV+) Moses are not brothers, yet they arrived together. We didn’t know their FeLV status when they arrived. We did know that Rooster could see very little with his one recessed eye and the other cloudy eye.

WheneverRooster  we would take Moses out of the cage, Rooster would cry pitifully until his best buddy was returned to him. Once they were tested, we had a dilemma. We solved it by vaccinating Rooster against FeLV. He had been vaccinated against FeLV, and received a booster, before he came to us, but we were afraid he was too young at that time for the vaccines to be effective. So we re-did the FeLV vaccine series.

Their fosters took extra precautions to ensure the kittens remained healthy. They were adopted together and of course, all of this was explained to the adopters.

How do we know kitties are bonded? It was easy with Rooster and Moses. Rooster was frantic without Moses and calmed down as soon as Moses was returned to him. Hansel and Willow aren’t velcro kitties, but you can see the happiness on both faces when they’re cuddled together.

Sometimes it’s quantifiable. Phoenix is a feral kitty who befell some tragedy resulting in a leg amputation by our vet. She has a territory, but we won’t put a three-legged kitty back out unless she’s miserable. She ate and used the litter box here, but we worried for her happiness.

Then Spirit arrived. He was put into the same area as Phoenix. They sleep together and hang out together. But most noticeable is the change in Phoenix toward humans. She comes out of hiding and she will present herself for treats if Spirit is with her. She has even allowed a sneaky pet on occasion.

Even when it’s not obvious, sometimes we just know. I don’t know how we know. We just do. An unbreakable love is something you just know.

I firmly believe that the lessening of fear is equivalent to an increase in happiness. This has been true in my life. And the lessening of fear has come, for me and from what I can see for many of these cats, from connection, sometimes to furry animals, sometimes to human animals. Reduced fear and increased happiness is what Thundering Paws is all about.

Trap Neuter Return Dripping Springs: A Community Effort

Our Trap/Neuter/Return Dripping Springs (TNR DS) group is dynamite! This week, Diana, Mike, and Calene trapped 17 community cats in Dripping Springs from two locations. As they came in, Thundering Paws kept them warm, fed, and clean. Seven people drove them to and from the clinic on Friday, 12/11.

Organized by Dr. Amanda Bruce, a series of spay/neuter clinics at the new PAWS Hill Country facility made possible the altering of 86 cats. This facility, located at 2965 FM 165, is 18 miles, 25 minutes from us. We have been using another great low cost, spay/neuter clinic, Hill Country Animal League, which is 69 miles, 1 hour 22 minutes away. You can see the advantage.

People from Blanco, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, and Austin worked in this effort for the trapping, transporting, altering, vaccinating, ear tipping, recovering, and returning of these kitties.

This is the perfect time of year to do this. Cats normally begin breeding in January, and produce three to eight kittens or more a year.

We know this series of clinics last week was a tremendous success. We are hoping that this will become a semi-monthly, or even a weekly happening. TNR DS is ready!

The price for the altering and rabies vaccinating of one cat is $50. For an additional $5, we give each kitty an FVRCP vaccination which offers protection from distemper and other viruses.

This time, we had a WONDERFUL donor who paid all our clinic and vaccination expenses. Thank you, Danielle Jaussaud and Cats Angels!

With our great team, these clinics, and a concentrated effort from everyone to finance these clinics, we could alter so many Dripping Springs free-roaming cats! Please donate! If you would like to join our TNR team read about joining here!

Fievel the Cat Gets a Second Chance

Fievel laying on a blanket.

Fievel was on his way to a high-kill shelter in rural Texas, when a kind but very young woman offered to take him. Her parents weren’t on board, however, and she needed to find him a placement as soon as possible.

Fievel is 13 but has many problems. He is deaf, almost totally blind, and was covered in scabs. A short-haired black cat, he would not have turned many heads in a municipal shelter even if he was in the best of health.

The young woman sent a plea to Austin Pets Alive’s program, Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.). Karen, a lady who lives about 40 miles away and monitors the P.A.S.S. website, offered to take him temporarily, thereby buying him a little more time.

P.A.S.S. contacted Thundering Paws. When the shelters closed in the spring, we took in so many cats and kittens that we’ve stopped intake except in extreme circumstances. Fievel’s circumstances fits this bill!

Karen’s daughter works for a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and the vet there looked at Fievel. She determined that his skin condition is completely due to a flea allergy. Since Karen had already bought and applied Revolution for Fievel, there were no more living fleas. One problem solved.

The vet confirmed his deafness and blindness. However, he is a very sweet kitty, who only wants to be loved.

He will go to Karen’s vet in Killeen on 12/23, then transfer to his Thundering Paws foster. He will no doubt need more vet care and that is where you can help.
