Trap Neuter Return Dripping Springs: A Community Effort

Our Trap/Neuter/Return Dripping Springs (TNR DS) group is dynamite! This week, Diana, Mike, and Calene trapped 17 community cats in Dripping Springs from two locations. As they came in, Thundering Paws kept them warm, fed, and clean. Seven people drove them to and from the clinic on Friday, 12/11.

Organized by Dr. Amanda Bruce, a series of spay/neuter clinics at the new PAWS Hill Country facility made possible the altering of 86 cats. This facility, located at 2965 FM 165, is 18 miles, 25 minutes from us. We have been using another great low cost, spay/neuter clinic, Hill Country Animal League, which is 69 miles, 1 hour 22 minutes away. You can see the advantage.

People from Blanco, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, and Austin worked in this effort for the trapping, transporting, altering, vaccinating, ear tipping, recovering, and returning of these kitties.

This is the perfect time of year to do this. Cats normally begin breeding in January, and produce three to eight kittens or more a year.

We know this series of clinics last week was a tremendous success. We are hoping that this will become a semi-monthly, or even a weekly happening. TNR DS is ready!

The price for the altering and rabies vaccinating of one cat is $50. For an additional $5, we give each kitty an FVRCP vaccination which offers protection from distemper and other viruses.

This time, we had a WONDERFUL donor who paid all our clinic and vaccination expenses. Thank you, Danielle Jaussaud and Cats Angels!

Fievel the Cat Gets a Second Chance

Fievel was on his way to a high-kill shelter in rural Texas, when a kind but very young woman offered to take him. Her parents weren’t on board, however, and she needed to find him a placement as soon as possible.

Fievel is 13 but has many problems. He is deaf, almost totally blind, and was covered in scabs. A short-haired black cat, he would not have turned many heads in a municipal shelter even if he was in the best of health.

The young woman sent a plea to Austin Pets Alive’s program, Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.). Karen, a lady who lives about 40 miles away and monitors the P.A.S.S. website, offered to take him temporarily, thereby buying him a little more time.

P.A.S.S. contacted Thundering Paws. When the shelters closed in the spring, we took in so many cats and kittens that we’ve stopped intake except in extreme circumstances. Fievel’s circumstances fits this bill!

Karen’s daughter works for a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and the vet there looked at Fievel. She determined that his skin condition is completely due to a flea allergy. Since Karen had already bought and applied Revolution for Fievel, there were no more living fleas. One problem solved.

The vet confirmed his deafness and blindness. However, he is a very sweet kitty, who only wants to be loved.

He will go to Karen’s vet in Killeen on 12/23, then transfer to his Thundering Paws foster. He will no doubt need more vet care and that is where you can help.

Adopt a special cat

Bijou revels in being petted and has a loud, rumbling purr. Bijou is healthy and thriving thanks to Thundering Paws’ amazing and caring staff. He’s discovered that people can be good, and he is so happy to be with them!

Bijou was found in someone’s backyard. In the first few days, he hid his face and recoiled from human touch – frightened and expecting only cruelty from people, even when his eyes begged for kindness he had never known.

Fast forward to today, and Bijou is healthy and thriving thanks to Thundering Paws’ amazing medical team and caring staff.  He revels in being petted and kissed, and we’ve discovered that he has a loud, rumbly purr.

Because of the hard life Bijou has lived, he will need some long-term medical care, which may include medication and a specialized diet. Through every health hurtle, this sweet and dear boy has only shown patience and gratitude for all the people fighting to save his life. Bijou’s potential adopters will be informed of his issues, and he will go to someone who knows his history and wants a loving, purring, grateful companion who only wants to be loved and give love in return.
